Prevention tips
Certain types of food and drink are more likely leading to the production of gas in the digestive system and we should avoid:
- Foods such as baked beans, lentils and starchy foods like pasta and potatoes may pass to the large intestine without being completely digested. They are then broken down by harmless bacteria, leading to gas production.
- Fatty foods can delay stomach emptying and therefore lead to bloating.
- Drinks contain carbon dioxide which adds to the overall level of gas.
- Eating too quickly and chewing gum can lead to increased swallowing of air.
